Acting on the gut's microbes is not the first thing that comes to mind when looking to improve brain function and mental health. It is nonetheless a lever worth considering.

By way of example, an estimated 90% of our serotonin is produced in the gut.

And through a two-way communication network called the brain-gut-microbiome (BGM) axis, that serotonin reaches the brain and directly alters neurotransmitter levels.

Research also links gut bacteria to the activity of brain cells involved in inflammation and neurodegeneration.

We know that gut microbes keep pathogens from crossing the blood-brain barrier and reaching the brain. They clear waste and carry out a major share of the immune system's work.

Then there is the relationship between the microbiome and psychiatric disorders.

The gut microbiome has been associated with anxiety, depression, autism, schizophrenia and neurodegenerative disorders.

A healthy gut underpins a healthy mind

A healthy gut is, according to neuroscience specialists, a determining factor.

The problem: most of us carry an imbalanced microbiome, and that imbalance sometimes begins at birth.

The initial colonization of the microbiome (through vaginal delivery and breast milk) is fundamental to brain development in the postnatal weeks.

Yet contemporary hospital practices can leave a great many people with a compromised microbiome. Think of pre- or postnatal antibiotics, and of C-sections that do not allow sufficient inoculation.

Add to that the damage done to the microbiome by chlorine, which can pass through the skin in the shower. A poor diet, low in fiber and high in sugar and fat. Or foods loaded with pesticides. The result is a microbiome that fails to give the body what it needs.

As an illustration, a UCLA study concluded that “four weeks of consuming a fermented milk containing probiotics altered the activity of the brain regions that control the central processing of emotions and sensations in healthy women.”

While universal clinical use is still a long way off, pioneers exist — among them the Kellman Center in the United States, one of the most advanced.

Hundreds of substances can improve gut flora, but research shows that not all of them are equal as psychobiotics.
