Physical and cognitive performance is therefore directly indexed to circadian cycles. For an executive, this means the quality of a decision depends in part on the hour at which it is made.
Chronobiology, the study of biological rhythms, has clarified these mechanisms. It has notably established the key role of sunlight — and especially of the light-dark alternation — in synchronizing the biological clock.

Being a morning or an evening person is a stable personal trait, one you usually live with your whole life.
Early risers are recognizable by their ability to be immediately operational in the morning. Night owls are active and productive in the second half of the day, sometimes into the early part of the night.
This morning-evening dimension is generally fixed within an individual, and tends to follow them for life.
Knowing yours is a performance lever.
You then structure your calendar by placing decisions and cognitively demanding tasks in the windows where you are most effective.
Sleep and the immune system

Bed placement
The bed is best kept away from the entrance door, and placed neither under a window nor directly facing the door: foot traffic and drafts work against continuous sleep. Preferably set the head of the bed against a wall, for stable support.
Colors
In the bedroom, favor soft tones and pastels, keeping bright colors for accessories and linens. The goal is to limit visual stimuli at bedtime.
No screens in the bedroom
Keep signal sources and screens out: no phone, no television, no computer switched on in the bedroom. A hard rule to hold for a permanently connected executive — but this is precisely where the line between professional mental load and recovery gets drawn. Devices stay in another room.
The bedroom is not an office
Avoid working in your bedroom or storing work-related items there. Separating the two spaces helps the brain dissociate decision time from recovery time. It depends on your home's layout, but the principle stands as a target.
Soft, subdued lighting
Lighting that is too strong can generate tension; lighting that is too weak, a form of discomfort. Aim for soft, subdued lighting, consistent with the darkness signal the biological clock expects.
An uncluttered space
A tidy, uncluttered space — including under the bed — reduces stimulation and makes winding down easier. Overall, the fewer pieces of furniture and objects the bedroom contains, the better it serves its purpose.

If the external environment weighs on sleep and the ability to fall asleep, the internal environment — your state of mind — weighs just as much.

Mindfulness exercises will never fully compensate for lost sleep.
